The world is meaningless and empty. I have adapted that sentence from another one, which states that “your life is meaningless and empty”. I don’t believe in the latter statement, but I do believe in the former one. The difference is this: You can create meaning in your own life, simply by expressing it in the way you live.
You can express happiness by being happy. You can express love by being loving. You can express many different things, and you can create many different kinds of meaning — it is entirely up to you.
If you feel that your life is meaningless, then that is probably because you have not expressed the meaning you want to give to the world. Remember: The world itself is meaningless and empty — only you can give it meaning!
You do not have to give the world any meaning. If you prefer, both the world and also your own life can remain completely meaningless and empty. You can live a very normal life without worrying about any meaning whatsoever. You can get up in the morning, go to work, and go to sleep at night — none of this requires any meaning. You can eat a sandwich, you can read books, you can travel, you can marry, raise a family — all that any many things more… none of which require any meaning.
However, if you do want to create meaning, then you do need something: conviction. You need something that you actually believe in and that is important to you. It may be that this something of which you are convinced may make you different than other people. Being different may mean that you do not belong to “mainstream” groups that other people belong to — but if you are truly convinced, then this is a “feature”, not a “bug”.
For example: if you are convinced that you want to be happy, then you will not want to belong to a group that wants to be sad. If you want to be loving, then you will try to avoid people who like to practice hating. You may in fact have many convictions — and the more convictions you have, the more meaning you will give to your own life by living them out.
At some point, you may notice that living your life in a meaningful way may make you unpopular. Some people may say: “don’t be so fixated on this” or “don’t be so fixated on that” — and if you do remain fixated on such ideas, then maybe people will find you odd. Some people do not want to become attached to living their lives in a meaningful way. Indeed, for many people being a “popular” person is more important than having any meaning in their life.
This is completely natural. Indeed, I have a hunch that the more meaning you seek to express in the way you live, the less popular you will become. In other words: There is an inverse relationship between popularity and meaning — you can choose one or the other, but my hunch is that it may even be something like a law of nature that there is a trade-off between meaning and popularity.
Another great thing about life is that you are free to choose the life you want to lead!
